As one of the fast scintillators, pure CsI is an attractive material for use in
particle physics experiments. Its main property is the exhibition of fast
scintillating light. Due to high density and high atomic number Z pure CsI has
a great stopping power and a good light output. The attenuation length for its
own radiation is of the order of ~1m which enables a single-ended readout for
crystals of a length of 22 cm. Pure CsI is reported to sustain radiation
doses up to 10kRad. The temperature dependence of the light output is about
-1.5%/°C [Woo 90]. The properties of pure CsI are summarized in table 5.1.
