4.2 Material properties
The plastic veto detector (PV) built for the pibeta detector consisted
of four main components: (1) scintillator staves, (2) light guides, (3)
photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), and (4) a suitable support structure. The
specifications for each component were based on the criteria imposed by the
physical properties and needs of the other components as well as the experiment
as a whole. For example, the light guides needed to be transparent to the
wavelength of light produced by the scintillator. In turn, the PMTs needed to
be sensitive to this wavelength. This section discusses properties of each of
these components in turn.
