Performance and Calibration

Beside the development run undertaken in the fall of 1989, other research and development tests have been conducted with beam in the summers of 1992, 1993 and 1994. The aim of these tests has been the understanding of the beam, the optimization of the design of the apparatus, the study of the surface treatments of the calorimeter modules for minimal non-uniformity and highest light output, and the performance of the calorimeter and the active target. Other tests are being conducted with cosmic rays, such as the three-dimensional cosmic ray tomography of the modules and the measurement of the fast component over the total component of the scintillation light of CsI. Some tests required no source at all. These include the dimension measurements, the gluing of the PMT's to the back faces of the modules to ensure easy removal if need be. The test of 1989 and its significance have been presented in the chapter 6 and will not be discussed any further. Moreover, the beam studies done in 1992 and 1993 have been presented in chapter 3 in conjunction with the description of the beam channel. In this chapter, the development runs of 1993 and 1994 are described. The significance of the results of these tests are discussed in terms of the performance of the apparatus. In addition, the cosmic ray tomography set-up is introduced and some of its results presented.
